Before conducting the measurement with the insulating oil dielectric loss tester, it is essential to clean the oil cup. This step is of great significance. Because insulating oil has extremely sensitive reactions to even the slightest contamination. Therefore, it must be carried out strictly in accordance with the following key points.
a. Completely disassemble the oil cup electrode;
b. Clean with neutral soap or detergent. The abrasive particles and the rubbing action should not damage the electrode surface;
c. Wash the electrode several times with clean water;
d. Soak each part in absolute alcohol;
e. After cleaning the electrodes, use silk fabric to wipe the surfaces of all components of the electrodes clean (other types of fabric may have fuzz sticking to the electrodes). Also, be sure to place the parts in a clean container to prevent contamination of the surfaces by dust and moisture.
f. Place each component in an oven set at around 100℃ and let it dry.
Sometimes, due to the large quantity of oil samples, measurements are often conducted one after another on the oil samples. In this case, the cleaning of the electrodes can be simplified. The specific procedure is as follows:
a. Turn off the instrument, remove the entire oil cup from the heater, and at the same time remove the inner electrode from the oil cup.
b. Pour the oil from the oil cup into the waste oil container and rinse the oil cup several times with the new oil sample.
c. Load in the new oil sample;
d. Rinse the inner electrode of the oil cup several times with the new oil sample, and then insert the inner electrode into the oil cup.
This method of washing oil with oil can significantly increase the measurement speed. However, if the oil sample is extremely dirty or if it has not been used for a long time, the former method should be used instead.
