The application scenarios of the DC resistance tester are extensive, but not all usage scenarios are subject to mandatory standards and regulations. Generally speaking, related detection in power systems and measurement of wires and cables have clear national and industry standards as the basis for implementation; in fields such as electronic component manufacturing, most of the main execution guidelines are enterprise internal quality control norms.

The core application of the DC resistance tester is concentrated in two major areas, and the test objects and execution norms in these two scenarios are significantly different.
Power equipment detection
This field is the main application direction of the DC resistance tester, mainly conducting tests on the winding resistances of transformers, motors, transformers, etc., which are inductive equipment.
Through resistance measurement, problems such as winding welding quality, contact status of the tap changer, and inter-turn short circuits can be identified, and the health condition of the equipment can be comprehensively judged. It is commonly used in power equipment handover tests, post-repair tests, on-load tap-changing switch tests, and daily on-site preventive tests, etc.
Conductor material testing
This field mainly conducts tests on wires and cables, conductors, and other purely resistive conductors, measuring their resistance values per unit length, to verify the purity of the material and whether the cross-sectional area meets the specification requirements. It is widely used in factory quality inspections of wires and cables and the acceptance of power engineering materials at entry.
Extended application scenarios
Apart from the core areas, this instrument can also be adapted to the detection needs of multiple industries. In the electronics, communication, and automotive manufacturing industries, it can be used to detect various electronic components, solder joints, battery internal resistance, connector contact resistance, etc., and is widely used in circuit board welding quality screening, battery health status assessment, and line bundle reliability testing, etc.
It should be noted that the detection of transformers and motors in the power system has specific and clear technical specifications; the conduction resistance test of grounding lead-down lines requires the use of dedicated instruments and an independent standard system, and the two cannot be confused.

DL/T 845.3-2004 “General Technical Conditions for Resistance Measurement Devices – Part 3: DC Resistance Testers” is a dedicated standard for the power industry, clearly defining the definition, technical indicators, test methods, and inspection rules of DC resistance testers. Equipment that meets this standard can meet the basic requirements of professional power measurement, especially suitable for the detection of transformers and motors with inductive loads.
Power equipment test procedures
“Preventive Test Procedures for Power Equipment” (DL/T 596) clearly stipulates the regular test contents of equipment such as transformers and motors, and lists DC resistance measurement as a routine test item, and defines the basis for equipment qualification determination.
“Electrical Installation Engineering Electrical Equipment Handover Test Standard” (GB 50150) standardizes the complete set of test requirements for new power equipment before operation, and DC resistance testing is one of the core test items for equipment handover and acceptance.
Special test method standards
GB/T 3048.4-2025 “Test Methods for Electrical Performance of Wire and Cable – Part 4: DC Resistance Test of Conductors” is a newly issued national standard, specifically unifying the test process and operation specifications for DC resistance tests of wire and cable conductors. The applicable objects and testing methods of this standard have essential differences from the resistance test standards for power inductive equipment.
