With the enhancement of global environmental awareness and the rapid development of renewable energy, photovoltaic power generation has gradually entered people’s lives as a clean energy. However, in the operation of photovoltaic power plants, power quality problems have become increasingly prominent. High voltage static reactive power generator (SVG) is a kind of power electronic equipment which integrates real-time reactive power compensation, harmonic suppression, voltage regulation and other functions. Its application in photovoltaic power stations can be analyzed from the following aspects of its necessity and role:

First, SVG has excellent reactive power compensation capability. Photovoltaic power generation system is affected by solar radiation, and its power generation effect is difficult to control stably, resulting in a large amount of reactive power generation. If this part of reactive power can not be effectively adjusted and compensated, it will cause adverse effects on the power grid, such as power factor drop, voltage fluctuation, etc. The introduction of SVG can detect the reactive power of the power grid in real time, and compensate or absorb the excess reactive power as needed, so as to improve the power factor of the power grid and ensure the stable operation of the power system.

Second, SVG can also effectively suppress harmonics. In photovoltaic power plants, harmonic currents generated by equipment such as inverters can cause damage to the grid and other electrical equipment. Excessive harmonic current will not only make the power grid operation unstable, but also lead to other equipment failure or even damage. However, SVG can eliminate the influence of harmonic current and improve the quality and stability of power grid by detecting harmonic current accurately and taking corresponding compensation measures.

In addition, SVG provides fast voltage regulation and responsiveness. In photovoltaic power plants, sudden load changes or grid failures can cause voltage fluctuations. This fluctuation will not only cause trouble to the power grid operation, but also bring damage to electrical equipment. By monitoring voltage fluctuations in real time and output corresponding current compensation, SVG can quickly stabilize the voltage and ensure the normal operation of the power system.
