Importance of oil flash point determination

Importance of oil flash point determination

Flash point refers to the temperature at which a flash fire can occur on the oil surface when a flame is passed over the steam and air mixture escaped from the heated oil at certain intervals under specified heating conditions, expressed in °C. The flash point of the oil indicates the flammability of the oil, the content of volatile compounds, the degree of gasification and its safety. The hazard level of oil products is also divided according to the flash point. Oil with a flash point below 61°C is flammable, and oil with a flash point above 61°C is flammable.

It is forbidden to heat the oil to its flash point during storage, transportation and use, and the heating temperature should generally be 20-30°C lower than the flash point. There are two methods for determining the flash point of oil products: closed cup method and open cup method. The main difference between the two is that the closed flash point tester heats oil and gas in a closed container, while the oil product vapor in the open flash point tester can freely diffuse into the surrounding air, so the flash point detection of the same oil can be measured by two instruments The flash point values are different, and the higher the flash point of the oil, the greater the difference between the two. The closed cup method is used to determine the flash point of fuel and light oil products, and the open cup method is used to determine the flash point of heavy oil products.

The flash point is a safety indicator for the storage, transportation and use of flammable liquids, and it is also an indicator of the volatility of flammable liquids. A flammable liquid with a low flash point, high volatility, easy to catch fire, and poor safety.
